Speaking at the UN Ocean Conference in Lisbon, French President Emmanuel Macron (30 Jun) said, “we want to have this treaty on the high seas,” but, he said, “this is something that we're discussing for seven years, so it's high time to accomplish it.”
The French President said, the European Union is “finalizing 14 climate laws which should help with our commitments” to the 2015 Paris Agreement.
“What we're doing on land,” he said, “we need to also do that for the oceans.”
Macron said, “we should set ourselves ambitious goals for biodiversity and specifically for the oceans. We started this work, which needs to be finished between August and December because of the meeting that I just mentioned, and for which in the years to come, we need to bring the international community together.”
After his intervention at the Plenary, Macron, together with Portuguese President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa walked to the Lisbon Oceanarium.
The UN Ocean Conference is taking place from 27 June through 1 July, seeking science-based and innovative solutions to improve the health of our ocean.
