WE ARE DRIVING TO THE SAHARA DESERT | LGBTQ female travelers in Morocco

We are jill and Monae. We just spent the last month exploring the entirety of Portugal as a same-sex traveling couple. We absolutely loved our time in Portugal and really appreciate the safety Portugal comes with especially for the LGBTQ+ community. In this video, we are leaving the 4th safest country in the world (according to the World Peace Index) and traveling south to Morocco.
So far we have loved living abroad as a same-sex couple, although it does come with its own set of challenges. As I have said before, we have been very fortunate being in Portugal with its acceptance of visitors and their progressive acceptance of the queer community. But we all know not everywhere is as amazing as Portugal. Traveling as a gay couple can be complicated, and depending on where you are it's important to watch your back.
Morocco is one of these places. It is formally illegal to be gay in Morocco, and up until 2018 violence against women was not illegal. In this video, you will see how we get scammed in Morocco because we are women. Women and men are so far from equal it is visually clear everywhere you go.
Being gay and female in Morocco lead us to take extra LGBTQ travel safety precautions we would not usually take anywhere else.
In this video, we are renting a car in Marrakech Morocco, and driving 10 hours to Merzouga Morocco. We spent one night in Ouarzazate where we stayed in the cutest riad right outside the city. We did not know it then, but, Ouarzazate was where we had the best Moroccan food experience of our entire trip.
We did not know what to expect when we got to Marrakech Morocco, but this was one of those trips where it was vital to just roll with the punches.
