This short video captures an example of Cante Alentejano, a unique style of music typical to Portugal's Alentejo region.

Performed in unison by groups of men and women without any musical instruments, Cante Alentejano is a cherished cultural expression originating from the various municipalities within the district of Beja, in Baixo Alentejo.

Cante Alentejano flourished in casual settings, from laborious days in the fields to festive gatherings, with lyrics that capture emotions and snapshots of daily life. While it transcends social classes, it is predominantly linked with the rural communities in a region that saw the rise of agricultural industrialization and mining since the late 19th century. This traditional form of singing is kept alive by choral groups, some of which have been in existence for over a hundred years.

In 2014, Cante Alentejano was honoured as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO, marking its significance not just in Portugal, but globally.
