This video introduces a fundamental section of Chapter 4, namely Mackidner's "geographical pivot of history" theory. Developed in 1904, it would be the starting point for the theorization of the successive Heartland Theory, of which it lays the conceptual frame. After dividing the World into "Pivot Region", "Inner or Marginal Crescent", "Outer or Insular Crescent", "Desert", "Icy Sea", Mackinder argues that the control of the pivotal region would lead to the control of the World-Island (Eurasia), which in turn would assure global supremacy.
