STORYLINE:
Portugal is gearing up for early elections on Sunday with recent polls pointing out to around 20 per cent of undecided voters - among them, a majority of women.
On Friday, Socialist Party leader Pedro Nuno Santos appealed for the votes of the female electorate, as well as of young people and workers.
Portugal’s centre-left Socialist Party and centre-right Social Democratic Party have alternated in power for decades and are expected to collect most of the 10.8 million potential votes this time, too. But both are tainted by charges of graft and cronyism.
The election is taking place because Socialist leader António Costa resigned after eight years as prime minister amid last November's corruption investigation. He hasn’t been accused of any crime.
The public sense of outrage could lend further momentum to a rightward drift in European politics because of the radical right populist party feeding off disenchantment with the mainstream political parties. Similar trends have in the past gripped neighbouring Spain and France.
Despite tens of billions of euros (dollars) in European Union development aid in recent decades, Portugal remains one of Western Europe’s poorest countries.
