During the Siege of Diu in 1546, a group of courageous Portuguese women led by Isabel Madeira, including Catarina de Lopes, Isabel Fernandes, Isabel Dias, and Garcia Rodrigues, fought valiantly on the frontlines against the Turks. Catarina de Lopes displayed exceptional bravery during the siege. In one notable instance, she faced an enemy soldier who had advanced on the walls. Despite her physical disadvantage, Catarina engaged him in hand-to-hand combat, ultimately gouging out his eyes and overcoming him. This fierce determination, shared by all the women in the group, played a crucial role in defending the fort and repelling the Turkish forces.
